Wiring is not enough
A connectome tells you what connects to what, and with what sign. It does not tell you how strong each synapse is next to its neighbours — and that is where the computation lives.
We built a model of a real male Drosophila optic lobe from the MaleCNS v1.0 connectome. Every connection, every synapse count, every excitatory or inhibitory sign comes from the measured data. We fitted nothing.
It does not reproduce two computations the textbooks attribute to these cells. Direction-selective T4 measures a DSI of 0.001 against roughly 0.5 in the animal. The Giant Fiber fires zero spikes for an expanding dark disc — and zero for a contracting one.
The architecture for what it misses is demonstrably present in the wiring. T4's two slow inhibitory arms sit on opposite sides of its fast excitatory centre, with the axis rotating cleanly through the four subtypes. The detector is there. The model cannot compute with it.
We also audited our own figures for where each one came from, and found five defects — two of them our own gates reporting a pass they had not earned. All five are published in section 7, alongside the result itself.
If you show him a photograph of a chair and it comes back SEEN, that is not a mistake and it is not a joke at your expense. We already checked, and we are telling you before you try it.
The fingerprint separates responses, not categories. Across nineteen real photographs — five flies, three hands, a swatter, a shadow, four near-uniform surfaces and five other objects — no channel separates the fly photos from everything else. Every fly range sits inside its non-fly range.
So we did not invent a threshold to manufacture a decision. He responds to your photograph. What is in it is your business.
- — No LLM. No classifier. No learned parameters anywhere.
- — No trading. The fly's wallet can launch and claim fees. Nothing else.
- — No plasticity: it would break the determinism promise.
- — No colour, no second eye, no pheromones, no internal state.
Everything above is documented, sourced and numbered in the technical documentation.
